Tubus Cargo Bicycle Rack
This is undoubtedly the best production bicycle rack avaliable. Between my wife and I we own three, and I would never consider purchasing any other rear rack for a future bike unless the Tubus Cargo rack simply wouldn't work with the frame.
Here's why: #1: It is unbelievably strong and light. It only weighs 22 ounces (610 grams) but it is rated to carry 90 lbs (40kg). Its no exaggeration to say that most other rear bicycle racks weigh twice as much and can carry far less. I even occasionaly have passengers ride on it (just yesterday I gave a ride to a 120lb girl carrying a full backpack and purse, so maybe 135-140lbs) without any problems whatsoever on bumpy city roads (not that I would endorse that...).
#2: The rack is extremely rigid. With a full touring load in Ortlieb panniers I can confidently get up out of my saddle and ride aggressively without any sway in the rear.
#3: The price-to-quality ratio cannot be beat. Designer racks available through frame-builders are often prohibitively expensive, and lower priced racks are often built with solid aluminum tubing, which is heavier and simply cannot be repaired in the event of an emergency during a tour.
I unabashedly encourage any prospective rack buyer to get this rack.
Old rack, new use...
This old pine rack used to hold hymn books on the back of a church pew, but it's found a new use as a cookbook holder in my kitchen. There were several at an old Ontario farm auction twenty years ago and I wish I'd picked up more than one.
