Shadehouse 2011 10 23
Version 2.0, Section 1, construction started Sep 2011. This version is much better thought out. It's essentially 4 braced squares made out of 8' long 2x4's. These squares are joined together on the vertical sides by 4x4's with 16 galvanized bolts. 90% of the weight of the structure is the support structure itself (rather than drywall, appliances, furniture, etc.); therefore, I thought the galvanized joint hardware was superfluous. I may anchor the structure into the ground by cables when completed.
This section will be the brightest with only 1 layer of 6mil plastic film. This film will provide only 8% light intensity reduction. In my area (Tampa Bay area), light intensity is fairly high during the summer as we have clearer skies, by a bit, than South Florida and many tropical locations where certain species grow exposed to the sun. My Schomburgkias and Myrmecophilas have done well under 92% exposure. Others will hang under this top layer of plants and receive a little less sun.
In the back of this structure you can see Version 1. When Section 1 of Version 2 is ready all plants will be moved to it temporarily while the earlier shadehouse is disassembled and the wood is salvaged for use in Section 2 of Version 2.
Don't look at the yard. It will eventually be sodded once construction has been completed.
This was created from three oblique 9 x 9" NASA U-2 b/w negatives, shot on a roll aerial camera, printed traditionally, then assembled into one image using hand cut images, re-photographed to a composite 8x10 neg. Once all the lines and perspective issues were corrected, it was hand-tinted on the final 40 x 28; print I made in darkroom.
The stars were added, tidal lines were enhanced, however snow on sierras is real. It was created originally for KGO for a campaign c1982 called " KGO reaches your Universe". this was created long before photoshop was even a airbrush tool - using traditional retouching and composite methods. We made a limited edition poster of which a few copies still remain and the original artwork.
