The Baths Cinema Gloucester Road Bishopston
The Baths Cinema, Gloucester Road, Bishopston, BS7 1922-1936
The old Bristol North Baths were often empty in winter, when no one wanted to swim, and so they were converted into the Baths cinema, which opened on 1 August 1922.
The pool had been drained and a wooden floor, which took a week to lay, had been placed over the tiled area. The cinema had hard seats at the front and padded seats at the back; the three-sided viewing area above the pool served as a balcony.
In the summer months, the cinema was turned back into a swimming pool. Bruce Atkinson was the first person to lease this building from the city council.
Atkinson was also involved at Zetland Road, the Dolphin, the Vestry, the Redcliffe, Bedminster Town Hall, the Plaza, the Scala, the Kingsway and the Regent at Kingswood. In 1936, the Baths once more became a swimming pool all year round.
