Step 1: If you haven't already done so, measure out how long you want your rack to be. My curtain rod was expandable up to 80+ inches. We figured out where our wall studs were before-hand so we knew where to place the brackets and that helped us to know how long we could make our rack. The cool thing about this project is it's easy to take down and put up in a new house if you move. It can change lengths to accommodate different spaces.
Slide your hooks onto the rod as pictured. This helped me to get a feel for the spacing of the hooks and how many hooks/hats the rack will be able to display when it's finished.
