Specialized Tricross Singlecross
My new work/pub/hack bike, replacing my Carlton.
The intention was just to replace the frame but I simpy couldn't ignore the heavy discounts on offer for 2008 models, so a complete bike was bought, with the Carlton stripped and homes found for the parts.
I really liked the unusual niche of a singlespeed cyclocross bike (albeit converted to road use!)
As it will never be used off-road I swapped the 700x32c Specialized Houffalize cyclocross tyres for 700x28c Continental Gatorskin road ones.
The 172.5mm Sugino chainset was retained but it's 42T Messenger chainring was swapped for a more usable 48T one, along with a new Sram PC-1 chain.
The Carlton has been cannibalised savagely. For this bike it gave up it's Cateye computer, MKS Sylvan Stream pedals and toe clips, plus it's Christophe leather toe straps (I converted to toe clips in bad weather and don't know why I never used them before - it's much better!).
Finally a set of new SKS Bluemels mudguards and my old pannier rack from my Sirrus were added.
It rides fabulously on the road, with nice handling, the carbon fork ironing out bumps nicely and with the 48/18 gearing, spins along a treat.
I am particularly impressed with the Tektro V-brakes, which have massive stopping power and modulation (something that, sadly couldn't have been said about the Carlton's centrepulls - they looked beautiful and (just about) worked but locked up too easily!).
The addition of the bar top levers is a great touch and whilst of course they don't have the sheer power of the drop levers, they're really good. A huge advance on those dreadful secondary levers I had on an old BSA road bike as a kid!
Very happy with my purchase!
Update.....have now fitted a lovely little 8mm MKS chain tug - the alloy dropouts simply wouldn't keep the wheel in place, it constantly moved forward, no matter how tight I did the wheel nuts up!
If anyone has a Singlecross, Langster or any other frame with similar alloy dropouts, I highly recommend it
