Saying Goodbye To Another Detroit Landmark

Saying Goodbye To Another Detroit Landmark

The Lafayette Building, a 14 story office building in Downtown Detroit, was built in 1923 out of limestone and brick and designed by C. Howard Crane. It was in use until 1997 when it was finally shuttered. Over the past few years there have been plans to turn it into loft apartments, but water damage to the interior, along with other cost factors have prevented this from happening. The building was offered to Quicken Loans for $1 in order to try and entice them into making this their new headquarters, but to no avail. On June 25 of this year Detroit City Council voted unanimously to demolish this old icon. There is still a plan to redevelop this building going on, but they are running out of time.

2 restaurants currently in use, American Coney Island ( where the Coney Dog was invented ) and Lafayette Coney are attached to this building. You may notice the artwork on the windows on the left: Every window in this building is covered in graffiti. There is competition among taggers to outdo the artwork left by others on the window, and every now and then you'll see someone's painting scraped off and a new one placed in the window.

Mock Tudor Maisonettes - Kooyong

Mock Tudor Maisonettes - Kooyong

After the Great War (1914 - 1918), higher costs of living and the "servant problem" made living in the grand mansions and villas built in the Victorian and Edwardian eras a far less practical and attractive option for both those looking for new housing, and those who lived in big houses. It was around this time, in answer to these problems, that flats and apartments began to replace some larger houses, and became fashionable to live in.

This stylish Mock Tudor or Tudorbethan block of two maisonettes, featuring a shared central wall between them would have suited those of comfortable means who could afford to live in Kooyong (the suburb in which these flats are located), and dispense with the difficulties of keeping a large retinue of staff.

This cottage style of brown and red bricks with shutters and latticed windows follow the less cluttered lines of comfortable Metroland architecture that came out of England after the war.
