These non poisonous snakes are common residents at the Calendar Garden. We see them frequently in and around the pond, basking in the sun or hunting for their food sources which include small fish, frogs and worms.
We have had a number of incidents with these creatures. One day I was cleaning out the box where the pump for the circulation system is located. When I opened the lid, a large water snake slithered to the bottom of the box. I didn't want to put my hand in to clean it out, in case he had not gone out into the pond. I went about doing other things around the pond until, a few minutes later, the pump sputtered and quit running. Uh-oh, I thought. I waited till the next day and opened the lid again , only to find what I expected, the snake dead and about four inches into the opening of the pump. This was unfortunate for the snake, though the pump still worked when snake parts were cleaned out!
Then there was the time that Pam (below) was cleaning algae out of the pond and something leaped up out of the water and bit her finger. She thought it might have been a snake but later we decided more likely it was a curious turtle who mistook her fingers for dinner. At any rate, it was bad enough that she was dripping blood. Just happened to be my birthday so I missed it. :)

Moorland Cottage Garden
This is part of a cottage garden we look after not far from Morvah, overlooking the Zennor moors. Beautiful place in the summer, bleak in the winter months.
