new dog in the white house

The word's out, there's one of Tuna's ilk in the White House. Awfully cute, I must say!
Interest in baby Bo has generated lots of Portuguese Water Dog hits on my photostream today, and a photo request from the newspaper back home. Portuguese Water Dogs are an uncommon breed and when you live in a smallish town and there's only one other PWD in town (and she's owned by friends of ours), well, word gets around.
I didn't have anything on hand that fit their needs, so I had to set up a quick shoot. This is the result. What you don't see is the growling and the general "I don't want to pose" going on behind the scenes. Him, not me.
I shot about 100 frames; this was the best of both of us in the lot. I like it. I have so few images of the two of us together.
Yes, that's a wireless remote in my hand...it took a good bit of juggling and camera propping (I don't have a tripod here), and focusing on a stand-in pillow to get this shot right. Camera propping was done via our barbecue grill and a bag of dried peas, which makes an excellent stabilizing cushion in a pinch.
The paper got an unretouched shot; hopefully it will be your typical newspaper reproduction and the blotches will meld in with the ink. This is a retouched version that I replaced the original upload with after seeing it large and realizing that retouching is almost always a good thing. If I had had the time and could figure out my software I also would have corrected the flesh tones.

Portuguese Water Dog
This little girl was so nervous that her back leg would shake everytime I'd try to get her to look at me. She was adorable, though, and as sweet as could be.
