With fireworks bursting in the hot August air, we University of California students take a moment to come together and smile for a brief moment capturing not only the bursts of fireworks, but also the bursts of laughter we've had getting to know each other. It was only one week earlier that we met, but when you're abroad in a foreign country, you feel like your fellow University of California college students are like long lost family.
We spend the day in awe of Singapore’s Independence Day parades, concerts, and firework show. They all felt orchestrated in a way that seemed like it was just for us EAPers. Traveling to Singapore’s harbor front and experiencing a national holiday with Singaporeans yelling “HAPPY NATIONAL DAY” was all the more exciting with my new friends who blended in with the flag of Singapore painted on their faces.This is the first group picture we took, but that night took us by surprise as the Singapore’s National Service put on an impressive show of jet planes, tanks, and parades showing off Singapore’s pride as a country. As I look at the smiles on our faces on that August 9th night in Singapore, I remember celebrating Singapore’s independence with new friends independent for the very first time in another land of great food, great culture, and most importantly, great people. The semester was as bright as the fireworks, and it showed on all our young bright faces.

Singapore Harbor Front

This series is a small collective showcase of the places that have touched Aaron Lim’s heart deeply. Living in a developed city like Singapore, the photographer has always made an effort to explore interesting places around the world and inspire people to care about the planet. If he were to define his professional direction, it would be to ‘go forth and marvel at nature’.

Aaron Lim is also the Grand Prize winner and Nature category winner for National Geographic Photo Contest 2010.
