Europe - Turkey / Istanbul - zilversmid

A silversmith is a craftsperson who makes objects from silver and/or gold. The terms 'silversmith' and 'goldsmith' should be treated as synonyms: as the techniques, training, history, and guilds are or were largely the same.

Silversmithing is the art of turning silver and gold sheetmetal into hollowware (dishes, bowls, porringers, cups, vases, ewers, urns, etc.), flatware (forks, spoons, knives, etc.), and other articles of Household silver.

Thanksgiving preparations

Thanksgiving preparations

When I was growing up, my dad was an antique dealer among other things, so we always had a lot of silver in the home. We never had matching silver, like many other people, but we would have a set of forks that all matched each other but not the knives and spoons. The knives, however, would all match each other, as would the spoons. So it worked out. We used the silver all the time, because then it didn't tarnish and require a lot of polishing. I grew up with a love of silver, but a far less formal household, so I usually only bring out the silver serving pieces on Thanksgiving or other festive occasions. Because I use it seldom, I always have to polish it to really make it sparkle. It's a job I like, because it gives me a chance to see the details in the work and to recall all the Thanksgiving's that I've had in the past. Last year at this time, I had just finished several surgeries and faced two more, so I opted to eat out. As a result, the silver didn't get polished, so this year I had more work to do. Still, since most of this silver came from my parents' home, I use my polishing time as a time to remember them and some of the meals we had together.
