Life .........Andrews life for if it wasnt a tale of goodness overcoming evil he would never have been my friend, soldier, warrior and lover.
For Grandad FaFa as i lovingly know him yet never met was an exceptional human being. he was one of many thousands who signed up to join WW1.
A young boy in reality for too young to join.
He went off to war - the Great War.....having already established his love for books and poetry that spans three generations. He has his Medals in the Lancashire Fusiliers Museum in Bury on the wall.
He was a gallant man who was wounded doing his duty........shot in the chest through his cigarette tin and his beloved family photos.........his guardian angel working very hard there to save him.
Somewhere in 1917 he was captured by the germans and as we know very little about our POWs in WW1 its all sketchy stuff.
BUT .................i am able now to prove he was a prisoner in a camp in northern Poland called "Schneidemuhl" now since the Potsdam Conference post war its known as PILA.
A beautiful Polish historic town. it had up to the Great War and beyond a Jewish Population 300 years old.........They were not persecuted in this war but completely disappeared from Pila in 1940 May 10th........Gone 300 years of civilised cultured beings.

The books show stamps saying they have been passed as acceptable for Grandad to have. The Germans ( not Nazis for they did not exist in WW1) wandered their pages checking all is well and then stamped by The Commandants Aide as good.
Its poignant that my favourite poet "William Blake" and his poem about Innocence is stamped as well as the front cover.
It wil have been done randomly but i offer the idea that nothing that happens is random - its all relevent.
One book is "Whittiers Poetical Works" by an American poet called John Greenleaf Whittaker and dated as new publication of 1915 !
The second book is of " The Pageant of English Poetry" filled with all my favourtie poems of old.
There are crosses in this one in pencil - ? his favourites ? read and enjoyed , well never know.
This one is dated 1916 and again is stamped.
We think the 18 is representative of 1918 even though Grandad was incarcerated in 1918 onwards......the books must have come from home :-)

The Spine of one book has been removed whether by the soldiers for it shows text or by wear and tear........dont know !
It does however offer the first line that made me cry this Winter........
""that it is better we should both be free. It is best that way"".............WOW where this is from is anybodies guess. Any ideas out there would be welcome........hits right home to the point of my photos today - FREEDOM or lack of it.
