Fill 'Er Up
For ATSH - #10 I got your number
For 111 pictures in 2011 - #43 Numbers
This old gas pump stands beside an identical one at the Transportation Exhibit at Longmire (Mt. Rainier National Park). I have no idea when the pair were taken out of service, but it must have been long before my first introduction to the Longmire area. Another similar pump stands opposite the Wild Berry Restaurant a few miles west of the Park, undoubtedly decommissioned at approximately the same time.
In its time, it was operated by an attendant...none of this "self-serve" stuff in those days!...and before the gasoline was dispensed via the hose, it flowed into the glass chamber, filling it to the appropriate mark. The numbers indicate gallons of fuel, certainly not as tightly regulated as they are today. All the driver had to do was roll down his window and say,"Fill 'er up!" and while the pump worked, the "filling station guy" would wash the car windows all the way around.
But of course, we have technology now and have progressed past all that.
As always, I ask that you please refrain from posting graphics in your comments. Thanks.
Fill-in Flash
Many times photographers (especially me!) think flash should only be used at night or indoors! But when I was trying to photograph this scene, the shadows in the resulting image were too dark while the sunlit areas where exposed well. That’s when I remembered about what is called ‘fill-in flash’ which is pretty much using the flash to expose shadows/dark areas in daylight photography. After using the flash the resulting image was much improved.
