Painted Lintels
These are the same lintels as the previous photo except they have no been painted with Krylon Fusion White Satin paint. This is the spray-paint you may have seen advertised for plastic. It dries in about 15 minutes just like it says on the can. I did a test-fit for a red brick on top and it fits very tightly right now. Some paint came off inside the sockets, but it may still be a little unset. I will try again tomorrow after an overnight setting. I still expect them to be a tight fit, but with use they will likely loosen up. Lintels of the 1962 era are suppost to hang on tight to make a good foundation anyway!
I am not a big advocate of painting these antique toys, but I bought these specifically for gifts and I would like to give nice clean sets. Who knows whether or not these will survive beyond the use of the children I shall give them to.
Light pressure wash first - then strip the paint
They used a fan tip nozzle to clean but not damage the soft brick. Quite a bit of the paint - particularly the mortared joints - came off. We tested multiple spots to make sure this was not lead paint and all were negative for lead.
