We knew they'd pick us up hitching
We were thumbing rides on a small back road in eastern France with no luck. Suddenly, this colorful VW van appeared on the horizon, with bicycles and camping equipment on the roof. We looked at each other and knew this vehicle would stop.
When the driver, Andreas, asked where we were going, we said, "Well, we're not sure. Where are you going? Is it interesting?" People often seemed puzzled by this reply, but it's a great way to travel. It turned out they were going to Dusseldorf to visit a friend, so we went along. Here's Andreas and his girlfriend (whose name, unfortunately, I cannot remember -- this was in 1985) in the van.
In Dusseldorf the friend, Frank, initially was nonplussed by having us there. But he quickly warmed up and played Judas Priest albums for us with great enthusiasm. Later, he decided that he wanted us to appreciate the best of Dusseldorf. He insisted on taking us all to a series of bars in the fussgangerzone, paying for all drinks and cover charges, well after we protested that we couldn't drink any more.
