In June 1863 Serizawa Kamo ???, a violent drunk, lost his temper here. Serizawa got very drunk and started to smash the place up and beat up some of the maids either out of sheer malignance or as some reports assert because he was refused service for not paying his bills and smashed the place up. Serizawa Kamo ??? and his group got into a fight with a stable of Sumo ?? in Osaka ???, killing ten of them, and then burned down Yamatoya, a silk cloth store in Kyoto ??, when they would not give them protection money setting fire to adjacent buildings in the process,
The behaviour of Serizawa Kamo ???, was of increasing concern to Lord Matsudaira Katamori ????, the Protector of Kyoto, ????? Kyoto Shugoshoku, and both Kondo Isami ??? and Hijikata Toshizo ????. Worried for the reputation and continuance of the Shinsengumi ??? a decision was made to eliminate Serizawa Kamo ???
On September 10th 1863 Kondo Isami ??? and Hijikata Toshizo ???? held a party here for Serizawa Kamo ??? and his supporters Hirayama Goro ???? and Hirama Juusuke ?? ??. In the meantime a party of Shinsengumi had gone to the house of Yagi Gennojo ?? ??? ?? where Serizawa was staying. Meanwhile Kondo Isami ??? and Hijikata Toshizo ???? got Serizawa's group very drunk before they left for the Maekawa house ???? and their meeting with destiny
