    modern persian
  • Persian (local names: ', Farsi ; or ', Parsi , see Nomenclature) is an Iranian language within the Indo-Iranian branch of the Indo-European languages. It is widely spoken in Iran, Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and to some extent in Armenia, Iraq, Pakistan, India, Bahrain, and Oman.

    rug
  • A floor covering of shaggy or woven material, typically not extending over the entire floor

  • Rhug (normally Y Rug in Welsh; sometimes given the antiquarian spelling Rug) is a township in the parish of Corwen, Denbighshire, Wales, formerly in the old cantref of Edeirnion and later a part of Merionethshire, two miles from CorwenRug Chapel and ten miles north east of Bala.

  • A rug (UK), blanket(Equine and other livestock, US), or coat (canine and other companion animals, US) is a covering or garment made by humans to protect their pets from the elements, as in a horse rug or dog coat.

  • A small carpet woven in a pattern of colors, typically by hand in a traditional style

  • floor covering consisting of a piece of thick heavy fabric (usually with nap or pile)

  • A thick woolen coverlet or wrap, used esp. when traveling

Persian Hyphenation

Persian Hyphenation

This contains several photos from the Pesian book "maajaraahaaye jaavdaan dar falsafe", all showing word hyphenation at the end of line. The first one contains hyphenation on adjacent lines, while the fourth one shows hyphenation at page boundary.

In all cases exhibited here, the hyphenation is done at lexeme boundaries, most of them being subword boundaries in a coumpound phrase. As a corollary, all of them are placed at positions that would need a Zero-Width Non-Joiner if not hyphenated and if the involved letters would join together normally. That's why I believe a ZWNJ character is a good hyphenation opportunity in Persian text, with the usual consideration of not creating hyphenated parts of length less than three or four.

Note that the book has been set with pre-desktop-publishing facilities. In modern Persian type you do not see hyphenation anymore, since computer systems stretch and justify the lines automatically, but I believe hyphenation opportunities will still improve overall quality of the set type.
