John Marshall Renovation
The Hotel John Marshall in downtown Richmond is finally being renovated into high end apartments after much confabulation and debate. Its restoration will surely be a boon for downtown Richmond. The John Marshall was a leading hotel in Richmond from the 1920s until its closure in the early 1980s. The hotel was briefly reopened in the mid-1990s by Gil Granger, the former mayor of Williamsburg. Sadly, he did not have the resources to bring the hotel back to its original grandeur. I wish I had had a camera with me when I stayed there in 1997. Three floors of hotel rooms were open and the rest was closed. It was a time warp of 1970s mirrored wallpaper, vibrant carpet and mirrored ceilings.
In the end, it is great to see a landmark building being returned to good use.
