Granddaddy's Bottle

Granddaddy's Bottle

acrylic paint
24" X 36"

This painting is for my visual concepts class. The theme for the work we had to do was identity.

When I was thinking about identity I thought about how quickly one's identity can change. For me, I am experiencing this right now. Starting on September 30th of this year, my grandfather has not been the same. That day, he fell and broke this hip. When he came out of surgery, my family found out that the anesthesia had reacted with his early stage of dementia. When he woke up, he was not the same funny, kind person that he was the day before. He all of a sudden couldn't talk or eat and didn't even recognize us.

Seeing all of this made me realize how quickly identity can change. So for this assignment, I started thinking back to what identified my grandfather before the surgery and what identifies him now. I decided to use symbolism to show the idea of this sudden change.

SInce the surgery, he has had to have someone feed him, bathe him, and change him....all the characteristics of a baby. Because his new identity is now that of a baby, I used a baby bottle to symbolize him. Spilling out of the baby bottle is a root beer float.

When I thought of how my grandfather used to be, I thought of all the times my sister and I stayed with him and how he used to always make us root beer floats. This was a memory we have that is really special for both my sister and I. So the float represents what people had identified him with before the surgery.

In all, this piece represents the idea of how quickly one's identity can change and the impact that memories and certain objects have on one's identity. In a way, it is a juxtaposition of ideas and represents the vulnerability of identity.

303/365 - Our Daily Challenge - "Fake":

I have a little game I play on Friday's. It's called "How can I work Hannah into the challenge?" I'm so blessed that she comes to spend almost every Friday with me and, since she's my reason for wanting to learn photography, she's my subject of choice. I'm sorry for the shameless promotion of the granddaughter. :)

At any rate, Hannah is becoming very interested in babies as it will be only 7 weeks until her baby sister is born. Yesterday she went to the doctor with her mommy and came home saying "hear baby sister heartBEEP." :) She's quite serious about feeding her dolly. Her little baby bottle is a clever fake. Upright, it looks full of milk. Tilted to feed baby, it appears empty. (See other view in comments.)

Better on Black (Hit L if you have a minute)

Also, I'm sorry I'm behind in comments. I'm in charge of a piano festival for 400 students tomorrow and it's consuming my time. I'm still wondering if I'll be able to get my 365 done tomorrow. Fingers crossed for an easy challenge. I'll catch up with comments as soon as possible.
