canon ti1 eos rebel (500D) with EF 28-135 IS USM

canon ti1 eos rebel (500D) with EF 28-135 IS USM

I get asked about this camera a lot, in flickr mails and in real life, so I thought I'd post up my most recent response for others to read.

--------

I think it's a great choice. as it happens, mine is wearing out (over 150,000 exposures in some harsh environments (I take storm pics)), so I've been thinking about this kind of topic a lot lately. I'll tell you what I'm thinking of to replace it, but first the main items:

pros:
-great images (quality color size etc...)
-very light weight
-uses canon lenses to good effect, and also there is a large aftermarket for lenses, so there are many options available for a low budget.
-'good enough' for any type of imaging you want to do.
-good low light performance (up to iso3200 it's great, and it can be okay up to 12,800)

cons:
-the buffer fills up quickly, so you can only take 6 or 7 shots in a row before you have to wait for it to process. sometimes that's irritating.
-doesn't use sdxc cards. these are the newer and faster type of memory cards.
-not super weather sealed. working in the elements means it gets water and dust in it, and eventually this causes problems. fixable, but it's a chore.
-the viewfinder isn't all that big.
-not quite enough controls. some things are in the menus that you'd rather have a button for.

... so: overall though, I love it. unless you can afford a 7D or a 5DII, I don't think there's any reason to spend more. the 60D and the t2i (550D) don't really offer much over this camera.

I'm wanting to replace mine, and I think I'm going to wait for the next 5D (III?) to come out, because I think that's the only step up.

I've also considered getting a nikon d7000 or d300s, but those are both double or triple the price.

If I were to start again: I'd get the t1i body, and then get an 18-200mm lens for it. the kit lens (18-55) just isn't long enough. for me: the result is that I'm always switching between the 18-55 and my 55-250. they're both great lenses, but the switching is annoying and invites more dust etc... the 18-200 would get rid of this problem for only about $100US more than the other two lenses. (or if you've got lots of money, something like a 24-105L or a 28-300L would be even better. if you do lots of interior and don't want the telephoto so much, the 15-85 might be a better alternative to the 18-200)

Before the C44 came along, the C4's shortcoming of a fixed lens was solved by the aftermarket Geiss lens mount modification. Care was necessary to align the rangefinder coupling correctly when changing lenses, and the mount could be damaged by a careless user, but a nice set of lenses was available in this mount from Enna in Germany.

(No, the shutter is not broken in this camera: in the 21-C4-C44 series, the shutter release button stays down until you wind the shutter for the next shot)
