Wolf Cubs - Derry & Toms (Lost Department Store)
Joseph Toms istarted off as in 1854 as the proprietor of a small toy and fancy repository and joined forces with his brother in law Charles Derry In 1862. By 1870 they had acquired seven shops around their original shopand also included a mourning department. The complex also provided accommodation for over two hundred employees who lived on site and had made a name for themseleves supplying goods to the upper classes of South Kensington.
In1920 John Baker of Baker and Co acquired the Derry and Toms business and retained the company name. In 1932 the current building we see today was opened for business as the new Derry and Toms department store. The building include the now famous Roof Gardens and the Rainbow room which was uysed for dances and banquet.
Sadly the business closed on January 13 1972 and the buidling was taken on by the then small fashion house Biba only to close in 1975 due to recession and changing fashion. The Retail area's of the department store were taken on by Marks and Spencers and British Home Stores. premises were taken over by Marks and Spencer and British Home Stores.
