On the Edge II
Pedra da Gavea, Sao Conrado, Rio de Janeiro
f/8, 1/8000s, ISO 100, lots of stops of underexposure.
Last Saturday I was going back home when I saw the Sun hitting the valley of this beautiful mountain called "Pedra da Gavea" (Gavea Stone). It was a hell of an image, but my camera was not with me by that time. I kept on driving praying to have the same show on Sunday. Here in Brazil we use to say that God is brazilian (and the Pope is carioca...) and He gave me a good reason to belive in that, or at least a good reason to belive He loves those whose job (or hobby) is to register His creations.
One hour before sunset, I drove to the same point trying to find a good and safe place to mount my tripod and camera. I was in a highway with a heavy traffic and the idea of parking my car in the middle of it was strange and dangerous to me. There is a parking lot in the upper floor of the most expensive mall in Rio, called Fashion Mall (original name, ah?), very close to that highway.
Voila! a perfect and clear sight of what I was trying to capture. During one hour I had my tripod and camera mounted watching people parking their Mercedes, Volvos, BMWs and Audi's, turning their backs to this beautiful scene and wasting money and time trying to buy happiness in the floors below me, while my definition of Happiness was unfolding right in front of my eyes.
We are strange animals.
taking in the world
“Some photographers take reality...and impose the domination of their own thought and spirit. Others come before reality more tenderly and a photograph to them is an instrument of love and revelation.” ~ Ansel Adams
Before I had Owen I worked in portrait studios in the mall for years. I loved my job (when I didn't hate it). I love kids and I love photography. The first place I worked was very rigid about how the pictures needed to look, how many we could take, etc. The second place was much more relaxed and encouraged creativity and trying new things. Needless to say I enjoyed the second studio much more.
However, Owen hasn't had any portraits taken in a studio and I don't have much desire to take him to one. Some of the people I worked with at the second studio were incredibly talented, much more than myself I would say, but I still prefer to take my own pictures of him. I don't want photos of him in a fake bathtub or with an old fashioned bike that, while cute, he has never even seen before. Of course I still take ones that are kind of...set up to a certain extend, but the ones I tend to like the most are just Owen being Owen.
This photo may not be done very well technically, but it is one that pulls at my heart. This is how I see Owen every day. Taking in the world. Content. Seeing the little things as amazing. Reaching out to life. Trusting. Ready to go.
