Feeding the baby
The great thing for me about birthdays is this: they always bring a bunch of new photo-inspiration in the forms of books, magazines, props, tools, etc. - aka my birthday gifts.
This year, the loot included a big ole second-hand book of photos by Annie Leibovitz, who's not my favourite photographer but one I admire nonetheless. As always, it was not just the images that got me. It was also the text, and this is my favourite snippet:
"Photography's like this baby that needs to be fed all the time. It's always hungry. It needs to be read to, taken care of." She goes on to talk about trying different approaches and techniques as the years move on, to keep her work evolving.
I'm trying a little bit of the same these days. Trying to find different ways of approaching things, different ways of seeing... y'know? This pic here is all about my attempts to work with diagonal horizons.
As always... some stuff works, other stuff doesn't, and most falls in the big moat in between. But here's the thing: if you fill the moat with enough debris, enough castoff crap, soon enough you'll be able to walk the distance from failure to the castle in the sky.

I was stung by a bee randomly on my left big toe.. Fire. It felt like I was lighting my toe on fire for about ten minutes. I hobbled home as quickly as I could and had to drop off my groceries and run back to the bus stop. It then proceeded to itch like hell for several days. I'm talking insane-wakes-you-from-sleeping-itching-from-hell. For at least four days.
So yeah, it was a good day. Also, I realize I have disgusting feet. They are dirty. I have alien toes [my family calls them "Beyer toes", as opposed to "Smith toes" that have functioning pinky toes FULLY EQUIPPED with full-sized nails and all. Lucky Smiths. To finish that back story, my nonfather is a Beyer and my Mum is a Smith.] Anyway, regardless of how often I sweep these godforsaken floors my feet still act as skin mops. It's gross, but I'm certainly not about to wear socks in the summer or SHOWER on any kind of regular schedule, pfft.
