With over 3000 brands registered in Weld County between 1864 and 1900, the importance of cattle ranching was well established before the commercial feeding of cattle in controlled lots betan in the 1930s. In 1866 cattle baron Charles ("Chuck") Goodnight of Texas invented the chuck wagon, a mobile cowboy kitchen, cafeteria, and commissary. To meet the needs of the men who spent weeks at a roundup or months on a trail drive, Goodnight obtained an Army wagon with heavy-duty axles and retro-fitted it to hold a water barrel, tool box, and bentwood staves for a canvas roof. There is also a trademark cabinet with drawers and compartments (a chuck box) mounted on the rear. When opened, the box's cover with its free-swinging hinged leg became a work table. Often, a coffee mill was attached to one side of the box, and a "boot" or storage bin for heavy, cast-iron cookware was anchored below.

Although a cowboy's food rations might be meager, boring or unsavory, the chuck wagon became a symbol of home--on the range. The daily fare of beans and biscuits was occasionally supplemented by salt pork, cornbread, boiled potatoes, beef and dried fruit cobblers. This 1890s-era wagon was used on a Wyoming ranch and donated to the Village in 1978. It was restored and converted into a chuck wagon in 1991-92 with further restoration a few years later.

These tiles are polymer clay that have been stamped, etched, inked and basically played with. I'm creating tiles for mosaic projects.These are just a couple of ones I created tonight. I have two mosaic projects going right now. I have resisted using commercial stamps and artificial colours in most of my work but I'm really drawn to the art of texture. It communicates so much. It is so addictive. I love mixing them with photo transfer tiles created from personal photos. My art workspace has broken its domesticated bonds and is stalking any stray kitchen surface or unguarded coffee table. I couldn't be happier.
