Me & my mom with our beloved old 1967 Volkswagen type 3 fastback. Of all the cars my mom drove when I was growing up, this was the only one which really had its own personality. We named her Suzie, after the anamorphic car character of a Disney cartoon. I enjoyed laying down on the big shelf below the rear window behind the back seats, and at one point, probably after watching Chitty-chitty Bang-bang, I got the idea to tape some strips of newspaper strapping to her sides as 'wings' in the hope of giving her the power of flight. My mom was none too pleased by that, but she was a good sport and allowed me to test my new addition by leaving the 'wings' on when she drove me to preschool the next morning. Needless to say, much to my disappointment, though the wings flapped about violently, the car resolutely did not lift off and soar over Santa Cruz, but simply pulled in front of my school as always.
I've always wondered what became of this car since she left our hands around 1980. I think my mom ended up selling her to a shady Santa Cruz Volkswagen Mechanic named Lou, a trade-in on a Rabbit with a notoriously bad starter. Is she rusting in a yard somewhere? Is she lying crumpled and smashed at the bottom of a gorge after a long ago night of partying with drunken UCSC students? Did she donate her organs so that another of her sibings might live? Or is she perhaps roaming the streets somewhere tonight in shiny new paint with mag wheels and an ostentatious sound system blaring obnoxious music?

We painted the wheels black, vinyl wrapped the interior matt black, heat treated the manifold matt black, and added the GT stripes and Lotus Register number boards. Its almost ready to go.
