Pelton Wheel Turbine Animation
- The Pelton wheel is among the most efficient types of water turbines. It was invented by Lester Allan Pelton in the 1870s. The Pelton wheel extracts energy from the impulse (momentum) of moving water, as opposed to its weight like traditional overshot water wheel.

- A common impulse turbine runner—the wheel that receives the water, changing the pressure and flow of the water to circular motion to drive an alternator, generator, or machine. Pelton wheels (named after inventor Lester Pelton) are made with a series of cups or “buckets” cast onto a hub.

Pelton Wheel Detail
Details of the water cups of a Pelton Wheel located at the Colorado Mining Museum. The sculpted hollows were designed to extract all available energy from a high-velocity water jet. These were used extensively in mountainous mining areas.
The water jet was sent to cups at twice the wheel's peripheral speed. If everything worked as planned, the water would stop and fall as all its energy was extracted.
The cups were removable because they would wear out - mostly from small, abrasive grains of sand.
Pelton Wheel
In a workshop at the bottom of the Brewery Shaft, Rampgill Mine. Pelton wheels were used to run compressors to provide air for rock drills and also to generate electricity.
