Electric Water Wheel

Woolen Mill Bull Wheel - Waterloo
This is a shot of the Waterloo Woolen Mill Bull Wheel located at the Terwilliger Museum. This wheel, or pulley, turned on the same shaft as did the water wheel which was the source of power for the factory. Various flat leather belts ran to other smaller pulleys throughout the factory which did what electricity does now, making the plant operate. For the looms and other equipment these were the electric motors of the era. Evans Chemetics recognized and preserved this important piece of history. The village of Waterloo transported and installed it at the museum. Evans Chemetic provided funds to build the canopy around it and the Waterloo Rotary Club did the construction work. It is located outside of the museum at 31 East Main Street in Waterloo,NY
Falkirk (Millenium) Wheel
We're back on the mainland, heading to Dalgety Bay, and we stopped off in Falkirk to see this marvel of engineering.
Threre's a canal at the top and a canal at the bottom. At rest, the wheel sits with a gondola at each level, filled with water. Barges sail in, and the water relevels, but due to Achimedes' principle, the weight in the gondolas remains the same. The wheel, in perfect balance, is turned by a small electric motor (same power requirements as a few teakettles, we're told) and the gondlas stay level thanks to wheels within the wheel. The rotation takes 5 minutes, and then the barges sail out.
It's truly brilliant.
