Bobcat with prey

Bobcat with prey

Quintana, TX

This was so exciting! I just wish the photos did the experience justice. Cursed fence!!!

So I was leaving the Quintana Bird Sanctuary parking lot, headed down that long road with the chain fence on the right side and this thing crossed in front of me carrying something in its mouth.. At first I thought it was just a dog. It went under the fence and it hit me... maybe it's a coyote! So I quickly hit the window button and with my left hand on the steering wheel I fumbled for my camera in the seat next to me and shot these one handed out the passenger side window (so pardon the poor quality!)

It went into the bushes on the other side of the fence and I thought I missed it, then to my amazement, a huge bobcat leaped over the bushes back into the open and I just barely was able to catch that action. The window wasn't all the way down yet and the car was in the way.

As I inched forward about 15 mph, she trotted down the line of bushes and turned and looked at me as I came along side of her. She had what looked like a big fat rat or a gopher or something in her mouth and it was just hanging there limp. But when she ran faster, it would swing back and forth. This bobcat actually ran out in the open along side my car for at least 100 yards or so! I couldn't believe it! She must have been carrying it back to her den somewhere for cubs because if not she probably would have just eaten it where she caught it right?

I must have about 50 photos but they're all pretty much the same. Darn fence! I feel so blessed to have been able to watch her for so long though, and also thankful that I didn't drive off the road. Luckily there's no traffic there. It was fantastic light, late in the day, but I didn't have time to adjust the cam so these were heavily Photoshopped. I worked on them for hours but some things just can't be improved.

I have seen 1 other bobcat, last year, but that one was far more brown than this one. This one was gray with lots of spots.

It was so cool!!!
Oh also, another cool thing happened (besides also finding my lens), I swung by Brazoria NWR that evening on the way home and saw a deer on the back loop. I always wondered why there weren't deer there, but now I know... there are! The skeeters were swarming so I didn't dare open the window so my phtotos didn't work out at all. It was a doe. She wasn't happy to see me and took a few leaps into the heavy bush.

It was a great day! :)
