BPMA and GPO2 MPO at Lord Mayor's Show 2010
GPO2, a Mobile Post Office originally made in 1937 to use as a temporary office at events and shows, represented the BPMA and the Postal History Society at the 2010 Lord Mayor's Show held on 13 November.
Consisting of a tractor and trailer conspicuously painted in Post Office red, GPO2 is in effect a post office on wheels. Built to the maximum size permitted on the road at the time (33 feet long and 7 feet 6 inches wide), it was designed to provide postal, telegraph and telephone services for visitors to agricultural shows, sports meeting and other social and business functions held at places where there was no permanent post office. The Ministry of Transport allotted the registration index letters 'GPO' for the exclusive use of the Post Office on special public vehicles, hence referring to the mobile post office by its number plate GPO2.
