cats rocking chair
Upcycled: The rocking chair was purchased at a yard sale for 5 dlls. The joints were all lose. The upholstery was moldy and the inner springs were rusty; a few of them broken. I had NO experience whatsoever with reupholstery. I didn't even know the names of lots of the parts and materials I would be dealing with (English not being my native language) so I got several books from the public library and studied the subject until I decided the minimum tools and materials I'd need to buy for the project from an upholstery website (new springs, tacks, tape).
Tha canvas is upcycled from a shoe storage hanging contraption I bought for $1 dll at the same yard sale. Aided by a seam reaper, I took it all apart, washed it and ironed it so I could use the sturdy canvas for my project.
I designed the cats and embroidered them having in mind our cat Amelia would be the one using this rocking chair the most.
It was a fun and time consuming project. I took the chair apart almost completely (library books guiding me) and I was afraid I wouldn't be able to put it back together. I did not own nor wanted to buy any of the heavy duty tools used for reupholstery so my hands suffered a lot of beating and were pretty rough for a while.
The wood was not in great condition and it seemed that the chair had been reupholstered at least a couple of times because there were pieces of broken tacks or nails incrusted in the wood that I couldn't get out. Hence the somehow crooked lines of tacks (there were spots were the tacks wouln't go in).
This is a totally amateurish project but I enjoyed it. It doesn't look professional but, hey, we love it, and Amelia does too. And it cost so little and we recycled as much material as we could!
