Flossflower (Bluemink) is a cool-season annual plant often grown as a bedding plant in gardens. Herb 0.3-1 m high, leaves ovate to triangular 2-7 cm long, and flowers are usually blue (though sometimes white, pink, or purple), the heads borne in dense corymbs.
Native to Central America and adjacent parts of Mexico, but has become an invasive weed in other areas.
Flossflower is toxic to grazing animals, causing liver lesions. It contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids.

The Purple Supreme Pansy (Viola x wittrockiana 'Purple Supreme') used in this mixed planting becomes noticeably fragrant when temperatures are above 65 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit and the wind is calm. It has a very sweet fragrance similar to that of a Japanese Honeysuckle. The yellow pansy used here is not noticeably fragrant. The other plants used here in this planting are 'Silver Carpet' Lamb's Ears, 'Gracillimus' Maiden Grass and Knock Out Shrub Rose. Sam Bahr, photographer
