Hood is stunning but once on their bikes, they don’t dare take their eyes off the dry ground of Skibowl in late August. Their body armor includes back and chest plates made from hard plastic, leg and thigh coverings, shin guards, arm pads, gloves and a full-face helmet. “Downhillers essentially riding a motorcycle without an engine,’’ explains Zach Blacksher, 27, of Portland. A typical downhill machine weighs about 48 lbs, has disc breaks on the front and rear wheels and has added suspension that can absorb up to 10’’ of cushion on the rear wheel and 8’’ on the front.
