Una macroglossa (Macroglossum stellatarum). Dal fioraio... si faceva i fatti suoi.
La macroglossa fa parte di una famiglia di farfalle chiamate sfingidi la cui caratteristica principale e quella di avere un corpo tozzo e conico ed un volo caratterizzato da un rapido battito di ali simile a quello dei colibri che permette loro di librarsi a mezz'aria o addirittura volare in retromarcia. Normalmente fanno rifornimento sui fiori a mezz'aria grazie anche all'aiuto di una lunghissima spirotromba (ci sono alcune eccezioni pero). Di norma sono notturne... la macroglossa e diurna e in questo caso si stava facendo un giro nel bel mezzo di Trieste (Piazza Garibaldi).

Purtroppo la foto non e di altissima qualita, vista la poca luce ho dovuto alzare l'ISO.


Humming-bird Hawk-moth (Macroglossum stellatarum). The Humming-bird Hawk-moth
belongs to a family of mohts called Sphingidae whose peculiarity is to have a stout conical body and to have a fly characterized by a rapid flap of the wings siilar to the one shown by hummingbirds which allow them to hover in midair or even to fly backwards. Usually they feed on flower hovering midair thanks also to the help of a very long proboscis (with some exceptions). Usually they are nocturnal... the Humming-bird Hawk-moth is daytime and in this case it was wandering in the middle of the town of Trieste (in Garibaldi Square).

Unfortunately the picture is not of very high quality since given the low light conditions I had to raise the ISO settings.

This is the co-owner of the florist I go to once in awhile and take some shots. I was actually there selling an ad that day but I did take my camera with me. She was showing me a bud vase her mom found at Goodwill, the vase turned into the hat she's wearing!
