We went with four heavy-duty vans and pick-ups as back-up. Our supplies neatly stowed away. High energy food, sophisticated survival gear, satelite phone, cell phones, long-distant two way walkie-talkies--all made our crossing safe and secure. Quite a contrast from those early pioneers who crossed with little more than the clothes on their backs. But, even with all the security of gear, food and protection we gained a greater insight into the hearts and minds of those who went before.
