Echinopsis 'Eclipse' at Sunset
I should be in bed right now, but I just couldn't resist uploading this photo. This is Echinopsis 'Eclipse' illuminated by the final rays of the setting sun. The flowers on this cactus are like explosions of pastel, sherbet-y colors which erupt in opulence and breathtaking beauty ... coloring their little corner of the world ... and commanding attention from all who pass by. Then, as quickly as they come, they fade into history just one day after their arrival.
The actual flower colors are soft peach and rich pink with a beautiful green throat. The additions of lavender and rose in this photo are produced by the interplay of the late afternoon light and the encroaching shadows.
'Eclipse' is one of the ISI Schick Hybrids produced at Huntington Botanical Gardens in San Marino, California, and it's a beauty, just like its relatives. It requires a little patience because on most days, the plant looks like many other cactus plants ... green and thorny ... but then when you least expect it, you walk outside, and it looks like this, and you're reminded of just how beautiful this world can be.
And, if you're wise, you'll run get your camera and do what you do best so that you and others can enjoy the beauty of these flowers all year long ... right here on Flickr.
Now, I'm going to go eat some Bluebell Rainbow Sherbet and go to bed.
