AIMCA Triathlon 2011 MJ and Aaron
It was a sunny but cool 48 degree morning as 3 Strada teammates braved the cool waters at the Amica Insurance Triathlon Series Championship at Firebird Lake today. Mary Julia Albert, Greg Albert & Aaron Apel all looked calm, cool and relaxed prior to the start of the race. Aaron was off first in the men's 39 and under race wave, followed 5 minutes later by Greg in the men's 40 and over wave, and 5 minutes later MJ was off in the women's and relay wave. All three showed their strong swimming backgrounds by positioning themselves in each of the three lead swim packs and they all exited the lake in the top 3 of their waves looking strong and running to the bike transition. Exiting the transition area on their bikes the Strada colors were flying strong and proud and probably a little chilled as they went out on a very technical bike course with many 90 degree and tight hair pin turns. It was a perfect course for these Strada rides as they showed their strong cornering skills against the other triathletes. All three looked good on the bike course and made it back safely to the transition area and switched to their running gear. They each said that the first few hundred meters was painful because their toes were so cold and numb from the bike ride, but they pushed on and all finished high in their age groups. Mary Julia earning a 2nd place, Aaron earning a 3rd place in the 19 and unders, and Greg capturing 5th in his group which produced the top two overall amateurs in the race. Great showing today.

My husband's first open-water triathlon and I'm so proud of him. I ran about a half mile to get this first shot. I almost missed the start and not because I was late, but because spectators had to wait in a long line for a shuttle, ride the shuttle, then walk .75 mile to the reservoir. So when I saw that I had 10 minutes till start time, I booked it down the path. I might not be a tri-athlete, but I'll do what it takes to get a good shot, and be there to cheer my man on. :)
