Jacob doing a self-install on his Xtracycle FreeRadical.
Rock the Bike installs more Xtracycle FreeRadicals than any other Bay Area dealer. We are also the only dealer that offers customers a self-install option. When a customer does a self-install, we interview them a little bit to determine their skill level and set a fee that accounts for the time we spent helping. Self-install fees range from $0 to $80 (full price). Of course, we provide all the tools, tea, repair stand, and groovy music.
We also make sure to call them or have them stop by a week beforehand, asking about their bike -- the brakes, the drivetrain, the BB, the headset, the paint job. Installing a FreeRadical is a good time to make these various upgrades. Then we order the parts that are needed so that the installation goes smoothly. We keep an inventory of certain staples, such as chain and cable housing, so that the shifting and pedaling are usually better than then the bicycle rolls into our shop. Of course we also have all the tools required, so the customer doesn't have to bulk up on tools they'll only use once or twice.
