Here is a dress circa mid-1800s along with a cockade to trim her hair. The dress has period styling, sloped shoulders, full sleeves, and very wide and full skirt. The fabric I chose is a cotton reproduction print from the era, in warm browns with old fashioned strawberries. To accent the dress, I chose a berry colored cotton solid for the waistband, cuffs, and cockade. The cuffs close with a snap, in order to hold the cuff close to her wrists and have the sleeves blouse properly. The lined bodice is trimmed with hand applied berry colored soutache trim, at the neckline and above the gathered section of the bodice. The hemline is embellished with the same colored wider decorative braid. The hem is about 2 and 1/2 inches from the floor, a proper length for a girl's dress from those times. The dress closes in the back with three small brown buttons, and hand worked button loops.
A cockade is a decoration popular in the 1800s - a circular, rosette shape worn in the hair, or on a hat. The cockade I have made is of the berry cotton fabric, gathered fully, then hand stitched to form the layered rosette shape. In the center is an ivory gauze flower with beads, and I've also added two streamers of ivory silk ribbon.
