While any bike that doesn't have multiple gears or speeds is technically called a "single-speed" bicycle, this term generally refers to a bike with a one-speed freewheel and coaster brakes.

My new single-speed conversion - Not a Colnago
Built this bike from an early 90s Concorde frame bought from londonfgss after my previous frame cracked. The Concorde frame came with a Colnago decal transfer which I have not bothered removing. Managed to reuse most of the components off my previous bike apart from a new bottom bracket (italian thread - loctite job!), a pair of new modern brakes and a fatter seat post. Frame not as light as I had expected it to be, but pretty comfy!
Project 365 - Day 105 - "Single Speed"
6/13/07
Since I bought a new mountain bike back in April I've decided to turn my old one into a single speed. The frame and components are over 12 years old and have been to hell and back.
I'm going to use it as a "grocery-getter" bike to tool around town on. After just two rides, I definitely have to say single speed bikes are a lot of fun to ride.
