what ....
From the inside of a common black spined urchin there was a strange eerie glow. Do sea urchins do xmas decorations, has this one fed on radioactive waste - or do they emit their own light to reveal their internal structure .... Never seen this before.
A rapid google - and am no closer to a conclusion. Ideas anyone .....
Extended google - still no idea. Can't find any references at all to urchins glowing - nor photos.
Update A few days later and no new info. Bioluminescence would seem to be the most likely candidate. Maybe one day someone who knows about such things will just happen by and provide the answer. Meanwhile I will be checking on any black urchins I come across ; - ))
I did not expect to get an answer about this quickly - but strangely enough one of the people below is linked to someone who ....... and yes - there are some sea urchins that are bioluminescent. One of which is Astropyga pulvinata - which is common in the Indian and Pacific Oceans, Thank you for asking - and for passing the info on.
