Swordfishing The Atlantic c.1890 -Shadowbox, Rex Stewart
How adventurous it was for men to get out in the open waters to risk life and limb to bring food home for their families -and have enough to market for a living. This scene is reminenscent of those times past and these times 'today'.
It took much research and planning to accurately produce this particular work in detail. Again, the key -to draw 'in' the viewer by producing the work to make it appear as a painting. To carve the wood sea and blend it in with the background to make it a whole concept. This is the challenging part of the entire piece -but the rewards are phenominal when the process is done correctly.
I make it a priority to sketch out my concepts before 'working' the box. Also, I make every attempt to keep my materials uniform with the shadowbox since it's a wood object. Therefore, everything in the scene must be made of wood including the sails. Some of my earlier pieces had cloth sails, but I found that the presentation is more unique when everything is made from the same material.
"Swordfishing The Atlantic " is one of the pieces that carries this signature.
A Day At The Dock, Maine Coast c.1910 -Wood Shadowbox
This work had taken a month to complete, usually the ballpark for most of my larger pieces.
I wanted to experiment with buildings and make a change from ocean views to dock views. So I produced this piece which depict dock activity in a coastal Maine town at the turn of the 20th century.
Today, I'm working effectively to produce lighthouse subjects where one can turn on the switch from behind the shadowbox and get a subtle light shining on the sailing vessel either in the distance or up close. The effect is phenominal.
For the maritime collector who has 'everything'...a shadowbox is, indeed, the way to go.
