Vang Vieng 2
Previously: Vientiane.
Day 57: Sunday 20th January. Tubing in Vang Vieng. (Looking downriver).
Vang Vieng would be a tiny riverside Laos town, were it not for the huge, insatiable tourist influx of 20-something backpackers here to ride down the gentle river on inflated tractor tire inner tubes and stop at bars along the way.
The first bar is probably under 100 metres from the common launch point. Someone stands there with a pole with a hook on the end, pulling people (otherwise you float past helplessly in your tire) in. The bar is on a wooden platform above the river, and there's a swing from which you can dive into the water. This is repeated further down the river at at least five more riverside bars - with the swings becoming progressively more exciting (as here: this is the last one for some distance). It's approximately as dangerous as it looks.
Next: Luang Prabang and then Thailand.
