It is no coincidence that HMS Achilles' motto 'FORTITER IN RE' (Strength in all things) reflects the mythical attributes of the Greek Warrior whose name she bears. Ships named Achilles have been in Royal Naval Service since 1747, but it was only in 1939 following the Battle of the River Plate that the name became a household word. A light cruiser, Achilles, achieved fame with HMS AJAX and HMS EXETER in forcing the German pocket battleship GRAF SPEE to scuttle herself.
The present ship is a Leander Class Frigate and was designed in the 1960's and launched in 1968. She is armed with a Mark 6 4.5 gun, a Seacat, ship to air missile system and modern long range radar and submarine detection equipment. Her conversion to the Seawolf Missile System and Lynx helicopter is planned for late 1982. Her most effective Anti-Submarine weapon is the Wasp helicopter with its mark 44 and mark 46 torpedoes. HMS Achilles two steam powered turbines produce 30,000 h.p., enough to propel the sleek warship through the water at speeds of up to 30 knots.
The ship has recently returned from a highly successful tour of the West Indies. At present, she is engaged in duties in home waters and maintains her connections with her adopted town Swansea. On the last Navy Days, over 11,000 people visited HMS Achilles and she hopes to welcome even more this year.

Statue of Achilles thniskon (dying) at the Corfu Achilleion.
In Greek mythology, when Achilles was a baby, it was foretold that he would die in battle from an arrow in the foot. To prevent his death, his mother Thetis took Achilles to the River Styx which was supposed to offer powers of invincibility and dipped his body into the water. But as Thetis held Achilles by the heel, his heel was not washed over by the water of the magical river. Achilles grew up to be a man of war who survived many great battles. But one day, a poisonous arrow shot at him was lodged in his heel, killing him shortly after. Still, Achilles is remembered as one of the greatest fighters who ever lived.
