Found: I find that whenever I come here I am transported back to being a kid around 12 years old again, when kids' heroes were their Dads' generation. The comic book colors seemed appropriate to share that feeling I get as I "Marvel" around these wonderful old planes. What I first learned about World War I and World War II, -- like most kids -- I learned first from the comic books.
I could spend an hour or two in this corner of the museum. Behind these great planes, there is a Wright Flyer Replica (not visible) the Curtiss Jenny I did in a previous painting, and then you come around to this beautiful old Flying Fortress with the Stearman biplane above and to the right and the Mustang in the foreground. Just out of the picture left and to the background is a Thunderbolt and a Jet (don't know jets except for the MIG). Behind me is a Curtiss Tomahawk (Flying Tiger).
There is something about B-17 Flying Fortresses that captures me. If there is ever "12-O'Clock High" or "Memphis Belle" or any other movies with B-17s on, I just have to sit down and watch them. I must have been affiliated with these old girls in a previous lifetime. It's weird. I also love the Mustang. You are in for a real treat if you ever get a chance to see and hear either of these birds up close. Engines are loud and horrible things to be arround, but the sound of a B-17 is the sound of perseverance, stick-to-itiveness, dependability, and getting the job done. The mustang on the other hand is a high speed buzz that is just impossible to imagine and probably the pretty sound ever made by one of man's machines. The Mustangs and the B-17s near the end of WWII shared a common destiny, together. The rate at which these lumbering old bombers were being shot down came to a screeching halt as the new P-51s were assigned their role as fighter escorts. I think of these as the last of the great prop-planes, but they are still the crem de la creme of pursuit planes.
Day Two Hundred Seventy Six
June 21st, 2009
Life is so great, I can't even describe it to you.
Woke up, and made Dad breakfast. Then, we woke everyone up, and we ate breakfast and then brought the goats up for Dad to see. I think he loves them, deep down. :D
Went to church, and Nathan sat by me. It was awesome. I love being with him. And him and I both think church should be CHURCH, so I wasn't distracted by him being next to me. (mostly, anyways. ;)) Then, hung around, but didn't end up having time to take pictures of the kids.
Then, Nathan came over, and we hung out with the goats for a while. He told me he liked my outfit. It made me smile. He makes me feel so awesome inside, it's impossible to explain.
We made Sweet'n'Sour chicken for lunch, since it's Dad's favorite food. Then we ate chocolate pudding pie, and played Outburst. It was a good time.
Then the boys got on the computer, and we made secret plans. :P Then Lou and I watched Maid In Manhatten, which is a super cute movie.
Then, went out to take my pictures, and came out with some good ones, for the first time in a while.
I love when I have really good picture days, I really do.
