Biscuit tin of the Uiver

Biscuit tin of the Uiver

In 1934, to celebrate the centenary of the state of Melbourne, an airrace between London and Melbourne was organized.
Albert Plesman, founder of the KLM, the Royal Dutch Airlines, decided to compete. There was already a route established between Amsterdam and Batavia and they wanted to start flying to Australia as well.
So to show that they were capable of flying on that route, they joined in the race. The Uiver, a DC-2 passenger and freight plane, left Mildenhall near London on the 19th of october 1934. There were 20 competitors.
The race went via Rome, Aleppo, Baghdad, Calcutta, Rangoon and Batavia. Near Melbourne the Uiver ran into difficulties because of bad weather. The captain, Koene Parmentier, decided to go for an emergency landing on the racetrack in the city of Albury. The inhabitants were called upon to drive their cars to the track to light the way, so that the Uiver knew where to land.
After a while they continued the flight, and less than an hour later they landed at Melbourne. The flight lasted 90 hours, 17 minutes. Real flying time was 71 hours 28 mins.
The Uiver came in second in the time race, but won the handicap race.
Back in Holland the crew became heroes, and a real Uiver rage started. That is where this tin comes in. You could buy all sorts of things with the name Uiver attached to it.

Sadly, this story does not have a happy ending. Two months later, in December, the Uiver was carrying mail and passengers on its 216th return flight to Indonesia. It disappeared on its way between Cairo and Baghdad. It crashed, and was burned out completely.
It has alway remained a mystery has to how it happened. They know that a wing hit the ground and the pilot, Beekman, lost control, but no one knows the details.

Waiting for a train

Waiting for a train

This was Paris Nord exactly two years ago. I happened to find myself there surprisingly yesterday as my flight from Milan to home was cancelled, leaving me with the necessity to to find a train back to Amsterdam. It ended upm being the night train from Milan to Rome, then the Thalys up to Amsterdam, so here is a little souvenir of the trip, given that I didn't have a loaded camera with me this time.
