an instance of traveling by air; "flying was still an exciting adventure for him"
A continent in the northern hemisphere, separated from Africa on the south by the Mediterranean Sea and from Asia on the east roughly by the Bosporus, the Caucasus Mountains, and the Ural Mountains. Europe contains approximately 10 percent of the world's population. It consists of the western part of the landmass of which Asia forms the eastern (and greater) part and includes the British Isles, Iceland, and most of the Mediterranean islands. Its recent history has been dominated by the decline of European states from their former colonial and economic preeminence, the emergence of the European Union among the wealthy democracies of western Europe, and the collapse of the Soviet Union with consequent changes of power in central and eastern Europe
the nations of the European continent collectively; "the Marshall Plan helped Europe recover from World War II"
European Union: an international organization of European countries formed after World War II to reduce trade barriers and increase cooperation among its members; "he tried to take Britain into the Europen Union"
the 2nd smallest continent (actually a vast peninsula of Eurasia); the British use `Europe' to refer to all of the continent except the British Isles
Short-eared owl
The Short-eared Owl (Asio flammeus) is a species of typical owl (family Strigidae). Owls belonging to genus Asio are known as the eared owls, as they have tufts of feathers resembling mammalian ears. These "ear" tufts may or may not be visible. Asio flammeus will display its tufts when in a defensive pose. However, its very short tufts are usually not visible. The Short-eared Owl is found in open country and grasslands. The word flammeus is Latin for "flaming, or the color of fire".
The Short-eared Owl occurs on all continents except Antarctica and Australia; thus it has one of the largest distributions of any bird. A. flammeus breeds in Europe, Asia, North and South America, the Caribbean, Hawaii and the Galapagos Islands. It is partially migratory, moving south in winter from the northern parts of its range. The Short-eared Owl is known to relocate to areas of higher rodent. It will also wander nomadically in search of better food supplies during years when vole populations are low.
Hunting occurs mostly at night, but this owl is diurnal and crepuscular as well as nocturnal. It tends to fly only feet above the ground in open fields and grasslands until swooping down upon its prey feet-first. The flight pattern is almost bat-like, lolling and flopping around but with such grace.
There are two different Short-eared owls pictured in this series, which were taken on a clay-pigeon shooting range and rugby club in Ashbourne, Co. Meath. After waiting for 2 hours, and just before I was about to leave, the birds appeared. It was certainly worth the wait…a joy to watch them hunt and quarter the field in search of food, silently, skillfully and graciously.

Mysterious Light
On a short flight back from Slovakia, while most other people in my row were sleeping, you tend to notice things going on around you, especially the fact that you are in such a vulnerable and confined space. I have only flown a few times and always get a little nervous about it. It was nicely dissipated when I spotted some children jumping up on the seats reaching for the lights above them.
