it was a beautiful thing to finally see this story on the big screen. and it was beautiful!

jackie earle haley nailed rorschach! patrick wilson as night owl, billy crudup as dr manhattan, and jeffrey dean morgan as the comedian were also spot-on with their characterisations.

the other actors? not so much.

it was a good film ...

but. and there are buts. and spoilers ... boy will there be spoilers!

it just wasn't the watchmen i read. it's almost as if zack snyder and the screenwriters had read a different book!

why zack? why?!

it's like this film was made for 13yo boys. the action, the gore, the goddamned slo-mo. they turned the characters in the book into real superheroes! they jump and leap and fight and do all of the things that they didn't do in the book. wtf?!

zack snyder made a big deal about being visually faithful to the book and he is, but there are so many arbitrary changes to dialog or scenes! discounting the ending (and why they felt that this ending was any less ridiculous than the one in the book beats me!), i couldn't fathom why they had been made (except maybe for the above mentioned 13yo boy! :). rorschach's scene with the murderer - a meat cleaver?! really?! why change it?!?! dan visiting ozy instead of rorschach - why?!

i guess if i hadn't read the book most of these things wouldn't have drawn me out of the movie quite as much, but then the bone-crunching, slo-mo, the telegraphing of veidt as the big bad and malin akerman still would have done that :P

and, realistically, if they had been totally faithful to the book, only the book-faithful would have gone to see it.

strangely enough, i didn't have this problem with jackon's lord of the rings - maybe because the changes they made in that actually made sense!? i dunno.

this one gets a star each for the visuals, haley, wilson, crudup and morgan ... but loses stars for akerman, ozy, and the arbitrary changes - 2 stars ... aw, make it 2.5 :P
