Detail of my little inflatable Zilla-toy 'portrait from life' I painted Sunday afternoon to enter in an Artel Gallery juried exhibition with a theme based on 'the simplicity of a child's game' -- that was the direction from the juror (or the exhibition director). Can you read it? It says, "rock paper scissors my ass" -- and the implied followup to that would be "Godzilla beats every one of those." This phrase wasn't meant to insult the juror of 'Rock Paper Scissors,' but I fear it may have. I heard him say, "If it doesn't make me laugh, it's out," just as I was leaving, having been the very last one to drop off artwork, as usual. I guess it didn't make him laugh. I've been seeing this little blow-up Godzilla on top of a tall bureau for socks that Noguere has in his living room, for months now, and admiring its silhouette against the bright light from the main entryway. It's the blow-up aspect of it, its simplicity and whimsicalness (is that a word?), that I like. He seems so solid and cute, yet he's only filled with air, and is easily tipped over. He's up there on top of that tall piece of furniture, and is superimposed over the lower part of my big nude self-portrait titled "Passage," which is hanging high up in the main room mainly because it's relatively safe there. Even if the place floods, the water won't come that high, and it's safer than in my studio. Anyway, here I am, in the painting, huge -- way way WAY bigger than Godzilla. I've always thought I'd be "big in Japan." I'm too short to ever be big here, but I thought over there I'd be regular size or closer to it. Now, though, things are changing and everybody's getting bigger (except me, of course) so the best chance I have of being "big" anywhere is to paint my image on really big canvases. But I digress.

We kept seeing children walking around with these inflatable animals on wheels. VV wanted an inflatable toy, too, but I told him it wouldn't fit in our luggage.
