An innovator in Ethiopia with his home-made water pump
Kes Malede Abreha, a “farmer-innovator” in his community in Aksum, Ethiopia, developed a series of pumps to irrigate his fruit trees and crops, including teff, sorghum, on his dry farm. With help from Prolinnova, a non-profit organization, he is now showing other farmers in the community how small investments in technology can make a big difference. After receiving a small amount of funding from Prolinnova to improve his irrigation system, Abreha is teaching his neighbors about his water lifting system. Today, his family lives in a bigger house, grows a diversity of crops, and raises chickens, cattle, goats, and bees. (Photo credit: Bernard Pollack)
