Ste. Genevieve
Our third base of operations: the Ste. Genevieve Hotel, in historic Ste. Genevieve, Missouri. Ste. Genevieve is a cute little town with a resorty feel to it. It loves its history, which goes back to 80 years before Napoleon sold them off as part of the Louisiana Purchase. It boasts of having the oldest brick home west of the Mississippi.
I talked to a number of locals, though, and oddly enough all of them seem to have arrived in town five years ago. One woman relocated there from Ontario after selling off her investment properties just before the bust. Another came from San Francisco when she saw a mortgage on a shop and apartment would be one-fifth her rent. It's a place where people go to retire, where they go to escape the life they've lived with regret.
