(Detroit, MI) On Friday, September 4, 2009 at 12 Noon, Council Member JoAnn Watson and U.S. Congressman John Conyers dedicate a section of Randolph Street, Detroit, Michigan identified for Secondary Street renaming to "Harold McKinney Way" honoring one of Detroit's legendary jazz pianists, the late great Mr. Harold McKinney. This activity continues the work of Detroit City Council to acknowledge Detroit’s African American historical artistic and cultural contributions to present the fiber of Detroit culture. Council Member Watson, surmises, “Although many landmarks of Detroit’s cultural past have long been removed, the lifetime investments of quintessential musical artists and educators like Harold McKinney in today’s up and coming artists must not be forgotten. Harold McKinney’s legacy is embodied not only in the scope and depth of his musical compositions and his performance art, but also in the audience given young musicians. Harold McKinney developed a strong belief and commitment in the vitality African music traditions fostered and carried forth by African American composers and performers in the twentieth century. Mr. McKinney taught the musical craft and formula to both young and old interested in learning about their African heritage. Furthermore according to Michelle McKinney, “Harold, unknown to many, was a consummate lyricist as well as musicologist, teacher, composer, bandleader, etc. His lyrics to “Song For My Father,” “7 Steps,” and “Straight No Chaser” rivals anyone else’s lyric writing.” Family and friends are expected to attend the formal ceremony taking placed in Detroit’s Paradise Valley. Among those anticipated are: Jahra Michelle McKinney, Harold McKinney’s wife, Gaylelynn McKinney, Harold McKinney’s daughter, Kenneth McKinney, Harold McKinney’s brother, and Carlos “Los DaMystro” McKinney, Harold McKinney’s nephew.
